Rwanda has declared that it will permit visa-free travel for all Africans. This move is part of a broader effort to facilitate the free movement of people and boost trade within Africa, akin to the Schengen zone in Europe.
President Paul Kagame announced this initiative in Kigali during the 23rd Global Summit of the World Travel and Tourism Council, emphasizing the potential of Africa as a unified tourism destination. He stressed that any African can travel to Rwanda without visa fees, highlighting the importance of the African continental market. Rwanda will become the fourth African nation to remove travel restrictions for African citizens, joining Gambia, Benin, and Seychelles. Kenya's President William Ruto has also announced plans to allow visa-free travel for all Africans to Kenya by December 31. Despite the African Union's launch of an African passport in 2016, it has mainly been issued to diplomats and AU officials, falling short of its potential to enhance continental travel.
