How I Set Up My First Instagram Business Page and Got My First Customer in 24 Hours

Starting a business online used to feel like a big thing to me. I always thought you needed a website, lots of money, or even a team before you could sell anything. But everything changed when I decided to open a small Instagram page to sell something I loved — custom beaded bracelets.

I want to share the story of how I set up my first Instagram business page and got my first customer within 24 hours. I hope it inspires you to start yours too, no matter how small.

Step 1: Choosing What to Sell

I’ve always loved making bead bracelets. I used to make them for my friends and family during my free time. One day, someone asked, “Why don’t you sell these online?” That’s when the idea clicked.

I didn’t have much money for a shop or even a website, but I had my phone and internet. So I decided to use Instagram.

Step 2: Creating My Instagram Business Page

I went on Instagram and created a new account with a simple name: @BeadsByTomi (you can choose something simple and easy to remember too). After signing up, I switched the account to a business profile. This is important because it gives you access to things like insights, contact buttons, and promotion tools.

I wrote a short, clear bio:

“Handmade Beaded Bracelets | Affordable & Stylish | DM to order | Lagos, Nigeria”

Then I added a nice profile photo — a close-up of one of my best bracelets on my wrist. It looked neat and colorful.

Step 3: Posting Good Pictures

I gathered all the bracelets I had made before and took clear photos using natural light (by the window during the day). I didn’t have a fancy camera — just my phone — but I made sure the background was clean.

I posted 6 pictures to make my page look active, and I wrote captions like:

“This red and gold combo is fire! Only ₦1,500. DM to order.”

“Style your wrist with love – custom designs available.”

I also added relevant hashtags like:

#BeadedBracelets #MadeInNigeria #LagosBusiness #SmallBusinessNaija

Step 4: Sharing the Page With Friends

After setting up the page, I sent the link to 10 of my close friends on WhatsApp and asked them to help me repost. I also shared it on my WhatsApp status with a message:

“Hi guys! I just launched my Instagram page for my handmade bracelets. Kindly follow, like, and support a small business. Link: @BeadsByTomi”

Step 5: My First Customer!

Less than 3 hours after sharing, one of my schoolmates sent me a message on Instagram:

“I love the red bracelet! Can I get two by tomorrow?”

I was shocked and excited. She sent me ₦3,000 via transfer, and I delivered the bracelets the next day. Just like that, I had my first Instagram sale!

What I Learned

You don’t need to wait for perfect timing. Just start.

A clean page, good pictures, and real effort can bring results quickly.

People love supporting those who are honest and creative.

Don’t be afraid to share your work — your friends can be your first customers.

Final Words

Starting that Instagram page was one of the best decisions I made. Since that first customer, I’ve sold over 30 bracelets and counting — all from my small page.

If you're thinking of starting something, even if it’s just small chops, fashion, or artwork, open that page today. Be honest, be consistent, and don’t give up.

Your first customer might just be a message away.
